One of the most unique and breathtaking regions in Italy, Sicily has experienced a huge surge in visitor numbers in recent years.  Once it's own country, Sicily has been unified with Italy since 1860 though it retains it's independent character with a cuisine, culture and architectural personality quite different from the Italian mainland.  Located next to the southern tip of Italy's 'boot', Sicily enjoys warm Mediterranean weather that is lapped up by summer holiday makers.  Famed for it's seafood, Marsala wine, desserts (cannoli and cassata), and rice balls (arancini), lovers of food will have a great time travelling around the island.  The capital, Palermo, is a bustling metropolitan hub whilst the towns of Ragusa, Syracuse, Enna, Agrigento and Mazara del Vallo are noted for their architecture, history and cultural relics.  Cefalu and Taormina are regarded as the main holiday towns and have plenty to keep tourists occupied.

Sicily is serviced by three airports, Catania-Fontanarossa Airport (the busiest with over six million passengers annually), Palermo International, and Trapani-Birgi Airport.  Cantania-Fontanarossa is located five kilometres to the south of Cantania (on the east coast of the island), and is visited by many international airlines including British Airways, Monarch Airlines and Thomsonfly.  Palermo International, almost forty kilometres west of the capital, is visited by Easy Jet and Ryan Air amongst others; whilst Trapani-Birgi is the main centre for Ryan Air flights on the island.  Sicily is the perfect size for exploring by car and many of the sights are only reachable by private transport.  Sixt, Avis, Europcar, Hertz, Maggiore and Dollar Thrifty are amongst the companies based on the island.
